Description
Brenchley Almshouses, dated 1789, are located on the south side of King Street. This building is two storeys high and constructed of red brick, featuring a hipped tiled roof with leaded ridges. It has a modillion eaves cornice and a string course. The structure includes four casement windows and doorcases topped with flat hoods, with Nos 78 and 80 sharing a joint hood. An inscription on a tablet notes that "These almshouses were built A.D. 1789 by John Brenchley Esq in his life time for the reception and support of decay'd housekeepers of this town and endowed with a donation of £12 per annum to each for ever." Nos 70 to 86 form a group with these almshouses.
