Description
The Old Rectory is a rectory that has been converted into a house, dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, with 19th-century additions. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a plain tile roof. The building is double depth and positioned at right angles to the road, consisting of two storeys and a basement set on a chequered red and grey brick plinth. A four-course plat band in Flemish bond runs around the building, and there is an Ionic wooden modillioned eaves cornice beneath the hipped roof.
The left gable end has a projecting brick stack, with an additional stack at the rear on the right. The façade has a regular arrangement of three windows, including two tripartite sashes and an altered central window. On the ground floor, there are two Venetian windows in open boxes, featuring splayed rubbed brick voussoirs. The central entrance is a recessed half-glazed door accessed by eight stone steps, framed by an architrave of Doric columns, a triglyph frieze, and a pediment. To the right, there is a 19th-century two-storey addition of about seven feet, which shares the same roofline. A stained glass panel in the rear first-floor window displays the arms of Archbishop Matthew Parker. It is noted that the building was said to have been rebuilt in 1767 by the Reverend David Waterhouse. The interior has not been inspected.
