Description
Nos 1 to 45 (odd) and No 47A on Harmer Street is a terrace built around 1840. The building has four storeys and is constructed of stock brick. It features a parapet and a dropped eaves cornice between the third and second floors, as well as a string course between the second and first floors. Each of the first-floor windows has two sashes with moulded architraves and cornices above, and most of the glazing bars remain intact. Some cast iron balconies from the first floor are still present. Originally, the ground floors were finished in rusticated stucco with round-headed windows, and the doorcases included fanlights and pilasters. While many of the ground floors now have modern shopfronts, a few retain mid-19th century shopfronts with pilasters and panelled risers.
Nos 1 to 45 (odd) and 47A form a group with Nos 2 to 48 (even) Harmer Street, the British Tar Public House, Milton Road, and Nos 1 to 9 (consecutive) Berkeley Crescent, with the British Tar Public House being a building of local interest.
