Description

This is a terrace of 48 properties dating from around 1840. The buildings are four storeys high and constructed of stock brick. A parapet with a dropped eaves cornice sits between the third and second floors, while a string course runs between the second and first floors. Each property has two sash windows, with moulded architraves and cornices above the first-floor windows; much of the original glazing bar pattern remains. Some first-floor cast iron balconies are still present. The ground floors were originally rusticated stucco with round-headed windows, and originally featured doorcases with fanlights and pilasters. Many of the ground floors now have modern shopfronts, though a few retain mid-19th century shopfronts with pilasters and panelled risers.

Numbers 2 to 48 (even) form a group with numbers 1 to 45 (odd) on Harmer Street, 47A Harmer Street, the British Tar Public House on Milton Road, and numbers 1 to 9 of Berkeley Crescent. The British Tar Public House is of local interest.
