Description
Merryweather is a house dating from around 1500, originally designed as a three-bay cross passage house with a smoke bay. In the late 16th or early 17th century, it was converted into a lobby entrance house, during which a chimney and floor were added. The exterior was refronted in brick and weatherboarding in the 18th century, and the house was extended by one bay to the left around 1850. In the 20th century, it was refenestrated and had extensions added to the rear.
The building is timber-framed, with the front rendered, while some framing, including a diagonal brace, is visible on the rear wall. The left side wall is constructed of knapped flint with brick galling and brick dressings. It features a hipped thatched roof with a central brick ridge stack and an end chimney stack for the 19th-century bay. The house has two storeys and four windows, which include 20th-century tripartite casements. A gabled thatched porch supported by rustic posts is also present.
Inside, there is an early 17th-century open fireplace with a wooden bressumer and English bond brickwork. The interior showcases exposed spine beams and floor joists, as well as internal partition walls. The first floor includes jowled posts and curved braces. The roof consists of two bays with clasped purlins, curved braces, a queen post, and rafters, showing smoke-blackening from the former smoke bay. The further bay features part-roughly hewn poles and a ridgepiece.
