Description
This is a mid-19th century terrace of six properties, numbered 55 to 59 Windmill Street. The buildings are not uniformly designed. The first two properties (numbers 55 and 57) are three storeys tall with a basement, constructed of stock brick. Number 55 is also rendered, and all buildings feature a parapet and a moulded eaves cornice. Most windows are sashes with intact glazing bars. Numbers 56 and 57 have moulded Italianate architraves with cornices and brackets to the first-floor windows, and cast iron balconettes. The ground floors of numbers 56 and 57 are rusticated, and feature round-headed windows. The ground floor windows of numbers 58 and 59 are flanked by simple round-headed doorcases. Numbers 56 and 57 have more elaborate doorcases incorporating cornices and pilasters, while number 55 has a simpler moulded surround. Cast iron balconettes are present on the ground floor of numbers 56 and 57, along with some cast iron railings and steps leading to the street. The terrace, together with the Emmanuel Baptist Church (which is of local interest), forms a notable group.
