Description
St George's Terrace comprises a row of mid-19th century properties built of stock brick, originally three storeys high with a basement. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the top of the facade, punctuated by a parapet. Numbers 43 and 44 feature raised panels adorned with scrolls displaying the terrace's name. Numbers 38 to 41 and 45 to 50 project slightly forward. Number 42 has a later slate mansard roof with two dormers. A stringcourse divides the ground and first floors. Each property has two sash windows on each floor, with the majority of the original glazing bars still intact. Decorative cast iron "heart and honeysuckle" balconettes are present at numbers 38, 39, 48, 49 and 50. Most of the ground floors have been altered to accommodate later shop fronts, although number 38 retains a round-headed sash window and doorcase. A single-storey extension, built in a matching style, is attached to number 38. Numbers 48 and 49 each have a larger sash window on the ground floor. Number 49 includes a two-storey extension with a single window, which forms the facade of number 50. St George’s Terrace, together with the Emmanuel Baptist Church (a building of local interest), forms a distinct group.
