Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St John the Evangelist was originally built as an Anglican church in 1834 and converted for Catholic use in 1851. It is constructed of stock brick with stone dressings and features a canted apse, a nave with aisles, and buttresses. A tall stock brick tower with a saddleback roof was added in 1872-1873 by the architectural firm Goldie and Child. The church includes a statue of the Virgin Mary in a niche and has a six-bay nave with double lancet windows that have a quatrefoil motif. Inside, there are slender cast iron columns. The church and the adjoining school to the northeast, along with nearby properties numbered 153 to 158, form a group of local interest.
