Description
No 38 High Street is an early 19th-century house with a prominent elevation. It is two storeys tall, constructed of red brick, and features a tiled roof with a wooden eaves cornice. The front is flanked by pilasters made of white brick. The building has modern shop fronts, and there is a porch between these that is supported by Tuscan columns and topped with an open pediment. The doorcase includes a semi-circular fanlight above a six-panelled door. On the first floor, two large three-light bay windows have been added, along with a segmental-headed window in between, which also has white brick dressings. The glazing bars are missing. Inside, the staircase features two balusters on each tread and has curved tread ends. This property is part of a group that includes Nos 38 and 40, St John's Priory, and Nos 46 and 48.
