Description
Pear Tree House is a house dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries. The external materials include early 19th century chequered red and grey brick, with the left end elevation rendered. It has a plain tile roof. Originally an 18th-century house, or wing of a house, set at a right angle to the road, it features two bays and a narrow central stack bay with a lean-to to the rear. An early 19th-century addition was made to the right, creating a broad entrance hall and a single room running parallel to the road with slightly higher floor levels. The house is two stories high with a garret; the roof is half-hipped and it has a cogged brick eaves cornice. Rear stacks are present on the left and right. The front elevation has a regular three-window arrangement of sashes, with plain splayed rendered voussoirs. The central door consists of four fielded panels and two top lights, set within a panelled recess; the architrave features ribbed pilasters and a frieze with paterae, surmounted by a shallow flat moulded hood. Inside, the left front room has a moulded cornice and sunk beaded panelling. The 18th-century section exhibits H-L hinges and chamfer-stopped spine beams with run-out stops. The attic stairs are possibly in their original position against the left stack. A main staircase was added in the early 19th century.
