Description

This is a group of three tomb chests located about 10 to 15 metres north of the chancel of the Church of St. Mary. The first tomb chest belongs to Sladden, who died in 1711 or 1712. It features a moulded black marble top slab on a brick chest, with uprights decorated with rose wreaths, skulls, and simple raised and fielded panels. The second chest is for Thomas and Susannah Jull, who died in 1726. This chest is particularly fine, with a moulded base and top slab, stone side panels, a central reeded upright, and corner uprights adorned with motifs of a wreathed plant growing out of a skull, ribbons, Death's heads, Wyverns, and winged cherubs. The third tomb chest belongs to William (and Sarah) Harris, who died in 1840, and is situated about 15 metres north. It is designed as a sarcophagus on a double stepped base, featuring fluted corner piers on lion's feet, with side panels decorated with palm fronds and end panels showcasing a Holy Dove in a radiant surround.
