Description
The Old Kings House is a 15th-century timber-framed house located on Strand Street. It has three storeys and features two windows facing the street. The side of the house that faces the garden is wider than the front. The southwest front, which faces the street, is now covered in red brick, except for the two gables that overhang on bressummers and brackets. The windows have been replaced with modern casements. The second floor of the southeast front facing the garden retains its original studded timber framing, while the ground and first floors have been built out in modern brick. Inside, the house boasts good quality panelling, a staircase, a roof, and plaster ceilings, all under a tiled roof. Historical accounts suggest that Queen Elizabeth I stayed here in 1573, and it is also noted that Henry VIII watched the departure of the fleet for the field of the Cloth of Gold from a garret window overlooking the Quay.
