Description
The Bell Hotel is primarily a late 19th century building, although the southeast corner dates from the early 19th century. The elevation facing the Quay features three storeys of red brick, with the upper floor covered in tiles arranged in alternating courses of scalloped and plain tiles. It has three half-timber gables and an iron balcony at the first floor level. The elevation facing the High Street is similarly constructed of brick and tile hanging. The main entrance to the hotel is located in the southwest corner, beneath a glazed canopy, with a Flemish gable above a coursed moulded brick cornice that extends into Upper Strand Street. This section includes three gables and windows set above, adorned with moulded pilasters and an entablature. Below, there are composite moulded brick pilasters and capitals, with a similar moulded string course between them. An iron balcony is present at the first floor central window in Upper Strand Street. The windows are a mix of casement and box sashes throughout. The roofs are plain tiled, except for the early 19th century wing, which has slated roofs. The eaves overhang on pairs of console brackets. The building features yellow brick, flat arches, and box sashes with all glazing bars intact, although the second-floor windows have two squares in each sash. Square section rainwater pipes and square hopper heads are present on the Upper Strand Street elevation.
