Description

This pair of tomb chests, dating from the early 19th century, is located about 30 metres south of the south transept of the Church of St Nicholas. The first tomb chest belongs to the Coleman family and features three steps leading up to a square monument set on a moulded base. It is adorned with trefoiled corner piers topped with incised roses, and has a fluted frieze above oval and square panels, with shell-decorated corner pieces. The second tomb chest, belonging to the Hatfield family, is raised on two steps and has urn-shaped corner piers. Its moulded side panels include recesses at the ends that once held brass plates, which are now lost.
