Description

Cottington Court Farmhouse is a medieval house that was altered and extended in the mid 17th century and early 19th century. It features a timber frame that is clad and rendered, with extensions made of painted brick. The roofs are covered with slate and plain tiles, and the building consists of two parallel ranges.

The entrance front is two storeys high with a hipped roof and stacks at the rear. On the first floor, there are three glazing bar sash windows, while the ground floor has two round-headed blank recesses. To the left, there is a door with six sunk panels set in a recessed panelled surround, decorated with a Greek key motif, all within a plain porch. There is also a two-storey bow on the right side of the building.

At the rear, there is a wing that features a plinth, plat band, and cornice leading to a Dutch gable, which has a clock face in its gable end. The opposite gable end has a plain kneelered parapet. Attached to the left side is a projecting flint wall with a stone-minted arch, a coat of arms above, and small lancet windows on either side, likely a 19th-century folly.

Originally, this was a manor house that included a chapel associated with St. Augustine's in Northbourne, but no remnants of the chapel were left by the time of Hasted's writings. However, the projecting wall and an outhouse to the southwest may have been reconstructed from the chapel's ruins. The interior of the 19th-century wing is actually late medieval and timber-framed. The building is partly located in Northbourne parish and is cross-referenced in the parish list.
