Description
Franklyn Cottage is a house dating from the early 18th century. It features a two-bay central staircase and a chimneystack, with an extension of one bay to the south added in the early 19th century. This extension included new windows and has undergone 20th-century alterations and a rear extension. The cottage is constructed of red brick, which is now painted, and features a Flemish bond pattern. The front and rear elevations are rendered, with applied framing on the front. The roof is covered with red tiles and has a brick chimneystack on the right side. The main building is two storeys high, while the early 19th-century extension is one storey. The gable ends include knellers and S-shaped iron ties. The front elevation displays a cogged eaves cornice and has two early 19th-century 16-pane sash windows set in wooden architraves. There is also a modern gabled sash window and a modern plank door, with an original wooden beam above the door. The early 19th-century extension on the right has one larger 16-pane sash window. The rear elevation features two 1930s metal-framed casements and a flat-roofed extension. Inside, the cottage has an exposed roof structure with through perlins and collar beams. The 18th-century staircase is of the half-winder type. The ground floor right room contains a brick open fireplace with a wooden bressumer and a spine beam with a beaded edge.
