Description

The Worth War Memorial is a war memorial erected in 1920 to honor the residents of Worth who lost their lives in the First World War, with an additional commemoration for those who died in the Second World War added later.

The memorial features a pyramidal cairn on a square plinth that has a stepped base. It is made from rough cut and tooled granite blocks. On the west face of the plinth, there is a bronze plaque that reads: "IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918, / THESE DIED IN WAR, THAT WE AT PEACE MIGHT LIVE / THESE GAVE THEIR BEST, SO WE OUR BEST SHOULD GIVE / NOT FOR THEMSELVES - FOR JUSTICE, FREEDOM, RIGHT, / THEY FOUGHT, AND BID US FORWARD TO THE FIGHT." Beneath this inscription, there is a list of eighteen names. A smaller bronze plaque below it states: "ALSO THOSE WHO DIED / 1939-1945," followed by two names.

The memorial is located at the center of the village, to the north-east of the church of St Peter and St Paul, which is listed as Grade II*, and in front of the village pond.

The memorial was unveiled in 1920 by Earl Beauchamp, although the architect responsible for its design is not known. It serves as a significant testament to the sacrifices made by the community in both World Wars and is noted for its architectural interest as an example of a cairn type, which is unusual in southern Britain.
