Description
The terrace at 32-42 Archery Square consists of six houses dating to circa 1928. The houses are built of white-painted brick with timber sash windows and pantile roofs. They are arranged as a terrace with three shared red brick stacks, although numbers 32-40 face southwest while number 42 faces southeast. The houses are two bays wide, with two storeys plus attic, and feature steeply pitched roofs, a moulded eaves cornice, and shaped-gable dormers each containing an eight-over-eight sash window. At the first floor, each house has a six-over-six sash window and a French window leading to a balcony with cast-iron railings. These balconies are supported by Tuscan columns and have under-built entrance porches. The porches contain six-panel doors set in architraves, with cornices supported by console brackets and flanking Tuscan pilasters. Numbers 34 and 36, and 38 and 40 have paired doorcases. Number 42, the end house, is oriented at a right angle to the terrace and has a shaped gable end that forms its principal elevation. This end house is three bays wide with a single attic storey window and a central entrance porch with a balcony above. All windows have louvered shutters. The interiors have not been inspected. The terrace is an attractive and stylishly executed example of early 20th-century Domestic Revival architecture and retains a good level of external preservation.
