Description
The former Dartford Union Workhouse buildings, dating from around 1838, are located to the rear and northeast of the range that fronts West Hill. Their mid-19th century function is evident from an 1868 Ordnance Survey map, and there have been some later 19th and 20th century alterations. The buildings feature yellow stock brick walls and slate hipped roofs with brick stacks. They include sash windows and pivot windows, and are connected by 19th century brick walls.
The range consists of the former Able Women's Hall and Lying-in ward, which is two storeys high with overhanging eaves. The ground floor has eight sash windows with vertical glazing bars and two doorways, while the first floor has ten iron pivot windows. There are flights of stone steps in the centre and at the southeast end.
The central spine range includes the former cook house and master's buildings, also two storeys. The east elevation features three sash windows above three ground floor iron pivot windows, with additional sash windows above and below. The former master's kitchen and pantry have two first floor sashes and a 19th century slate-roofed lean-to verandah on iron columns, which includes a French casement, a sash window, and a six-panel door. The west elevation mirrors this with a similar verandah and fenestration.
The rounded south end of the building was the former master's residence, featuring sash windows with glazing bars both above and below, flanked by stone flags on the ground in front. The north range houses the former chapel, which was part of a three-storey range until a new detached chapel was opened in 1878. This section has five ground and first floor windows on each side of the spine wing, along with six second floor window openings and overhanging eaves. There are end doorways in front of internal stone staircases.
The northwest range comprises the former Able Men's Hall and Accident ward, which is three storeys high, mostly featuring pivot windows with slightly cambered heads. There are seven pivot windows on the ground floor, five on both the first and second floors, and one modern first floor window.
