Description
The Former West Hill Police Station, built in 1843, is a single-storey structure with stock brick walls. It features a cornice and blocking course that extends around a central projecting bay, which has a pediment above. The central projection includes a four-panel door accessed by two steps, flanked by blocked window openings with rubbed brick arches on each side. There is blank walling set back on either side of the central bay. The original layout, as shown on the Ordnance Survey map from 1868, included a central reception area with two cells on each side. The eastern cells were later modified to include a large drying closet for the workhouse, while the western cells were converted into a single room but still retain a door. The building stopped operating as a police station after 1872 and subsequently served as a workhouse ward for tramps.
