Description
The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul is a historic church located on Manor Road in Swanscombe and Greenhithe. It features some work from the 11th and 12th centuries in the tower and chancel, but is primarily from the 13th century, with 15th-century windows. The church underwent significant restoration by Jabez Bignall between 1872 and 1873 and was repaired after a fire in 1902. It is constructed of flint with patches of stone rubble and stone dressings.
The church includes a nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a chancel, and a west tower topped with a broached shingled spire, along with a south porch. The lower part of the tower is of Saxon origin. The chancel features a blocked Norman window, and the nave has traces of round-headed recesses in the east wall flanking the chancel arches. The aisles and clerestory were added in the late 12th century, and there are three-bay arcades with pointed arches, angle rolls, short circular piers, and square abaci with chamfered corners. The tower was reconstructed in the 13th century, and the chancel arch dates from the 14th century.
Inside, there is a Norman font, a Perpendicular oak lectern (one of only two in Kent), an 18th-century pulpit, and a brass chandelier dated 1687. Notable monuments include a large standing monument to Sir Raphe Weldon, who died in 1609, and a hanging monument to Anthony Weldon, who died in 1613.
