Description
The Pest House in the garden of Scadbury Manor, located to the south-west of the house, is a 16th-century building situated at the south-west corner of the west rectangle of the garden walls. This small structure served as a Pest House for travelers along Watling Street making their pilgrimage to Canterbury. It predates the main house and features a timber frame now faced with red brick and flints. The building has two storeys and a hipped tiled roof with a sprocket eaves cornice. Inside, there is a blocked-in mullioned window. Historical documents from the 1570s indicate that travelers died in the Pest House. In the 19th century, a drying floor was added, along with two stock brick circular hop kilns, which later received crenellated parapets.
