Description
Dane John consists of a range of terraced houses dated 1822 and originally known as Donjon Grove. The group comprises numbers 16 to 18, number 19 (Penn House), and numbers 20 to 23. The buildings are arranged in two ranges joined only at ground floor level and are constructed of stuccoed three-storey buildings with slate roofs, topped by a stone parapet with a moulded cornice. The facades incorporate both fluted and plain pilasters, and rusticated bases. Fine cast iron balconies are present. Each house has a round-headed doorcase containing an eight-panelled door. Number 18 has been altered in a Gothic style, featuring a castellated parapet, imitation miniature octagonal turrets and pointed windows. Number 23 is a larger house with a three-light canted bay window extending through all three storeys. The ground floor of number 18 is connected to number 19 by a doorway adorned with a cornice featuring alternating triglyphs and paterae. These properties are set within a group which also includes the former Municipal Buildings at numbers 12, 12A, 14 and 23.
