Description
No. 76 Castle Street is a 16th century timber-framed building that has been refronted. It has two storeys, attics, and basements. The ground floor is constructed of brick, while the two upper floors overhang and are supported by wooden console brackets, featuring fishscale tiles. The building has an old tiled roof with two hipped dormers and a tall brick chimney stack. Inside, there is a Sun Alliance fireplace. The first floor includes one narrow sash window and a double-hung sash window. The doorcase features a simple moulded architrave and a six fielded panelled door, accessed by one stone step and a footscraper. The rear elevation has a gable with one 18th century round-headed sash window. The interior boasts an early 19th century staircase with three carved balusters on each step. Nos. 68 to 77 and Nos. 80 to 82 Castle Street form a group.
