Description
No 2 Castle Street is an early 19th-century facade attached to an 18th-century town house. The building has three storeys and a basement, with a stuccoed exterior. It features a moulded stone parapet coping and five 18th-century sash windows, some of which have Italianate surrounds. The central window spaces on the upper floors are blank, while the central second-floor window space has a moulded architrave. The first-floor central window space is adorned with a stone pediment, console brackets, and three paterae. The other windows on this floor have cornices and console brackets, and there are cast iron balconettes with anthemion moulding. The building includes two string courses, one of which has ovolo moulding. The ground floor is rusticated, with round-headed windows. The doorcase features a segmental fanlight and a guilloche frieze, accessed by four steps with footscrapers.
Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase with three turned balusters on each step and scrolled tread ends. The right-side ground floor room has 18th-century panelling, a carved wooden overmantel depicting flowers, and a wooden cornice frieze, along with fielded panelled doors.
Nos 1 to 9 and Nos 12 to 24 Castle Street form a group with this building.
