Description
The Stocks is a house located on Stocks Road in Wittersham. It is named after the stocks that once stood nearby. Originally, it served as the mill-house for the adjacent Stocks Windmill, later becoming the Parish Poorhouse and then two cottages. It has now been converted back into a single residence. The building is L-shaped and dates from the 16th century or earlier, featuring a timber frame with plaster infilling. The first floor of the north wing overhangs, supported by protruding floor joists and brackets, and has two small tile-hung gables above. The roof is steeply pitched and tiled, hipped at one end and half-hipped at the other. The house has four casement windows with small square leaded panes, and the side elevation is also tile-hung. There is a modern addition to the west.
