Description
Mill Cottage is a house that dates from the mid to late 16th century and was once divided into two separate dwellings. It is constructed with a timber frame and has a rendered exterior, with the left gable end and rear featuring old plasterwork. The roof is thatched and hipped to the left. The house has a two-cell, lobby entry layout and stands two storeys tall with an attic. It has three mid-20th century casement windows with diamond leaded panes and a mid-20th century studded plank door. The stack has a rebuilt shaft.
Inside, the cottage features an exposed three-bay frame with reverse-curved braces and shows evidence of original windows, including an oriel sill in the rear of the right-hand chamber. There is an additional original doorway with an arched head in the rear wall of the left cell, which is an unusual feature. Both ground floor rooms have ceilings with chamfered joists. There are back-to-back open fireplaces on the ground floor, with both having 16th century lintels that have been cut down in length; the lintel in the right room has multiple roll moulding. It is suggested that the stack dates from the 17th century and was preceded by a timber flue in the same position. The right cell has a 19th century upper ceiling, and there is a 19th century stair in the left cell, indicating that the original stair was likely removed when the house was subdivided. The name of the house and its unusual location over a small watercourse imply a connection to a watermill, although there is no firm evidence to support this.
