Description

The Post Office is a house and post office located on Church Street in Wetheringsett-cum-Brockford. It likely has a core dating from the 16th century, with a 17th-century addition to the right and an 18th to 19th-century wing at the rear. The building has seen little alteration since the 19th century. It is timber framed with old plasterwork and a thatched roof, comprising three cells and standing at one and a half storeys.

The front features a complete set of 18th-century casement windows with old square-leaded glass. To the left, there is an early 19th-century canted shop window with 30 small panes. An adjacent early 19th-century doorway has a convex reeded architrave and a dripboard supported by paired fluted brackets, leading to a six-panel door divided into two leaves, with the lower two panels flush and the upper four fielded. Another early 19th-century doorway into the house features a reeded architrave and cornice, with a six-panel door that includes flush, fielded, and raised and fielded panels. The building also has a gabled timber trellis porch and two dormers.

Inside, most of the timbers are concealed, but a chamfered ceiling beam in the center room is likely from the 16th century. To the left of the stack, there are two cambered collars with remnants of large curved braces from the principal rafters. The right cell appears to be a 17th-century addition, featuring some plain first-floor studding and chamfered ceiling joists with small lamb's tongue stops. At the rear, there is a one and a half-storey range that includes a 19th-century weatherboarded cart shed and stables, all under a glazed black pantiled roof.
