Description
Ransley Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century. It is timber framed and covered with painted brick, topped by a plain tiled roof. The building has one storey and an attic, featuring a present entrance front that faces the roadside. This front includes catslide outshots on both the front and rear elevations, which have hipped roofs and gablets, along with a central stack and an additional stack to the right in the outshot. The front has two wooden casement windows and a central boarded door, as well as half-glazed doors on the return and rear elevations. The rear elevation, which was formerly the entrance front, includes two large gabled dormers and bow windows. Ransley Cottage is noted as the birthplace in 1782 and home of George Ransley, who became the leader of the Aldington Gang after 1821 and is recognized as one of the last significant figures in Kentish smuggling history.
