Description

The Cosway Monument is a Grade II listed obelisk located on the west side of Newchurch Road in Bilsington. It was erected in 1835 by George Cooper and is made of ashlar stone. This tall, simple obelisk stands on a pedestal, and the north side features a tablet that reads: "As a tribute of respect to the memory of Sir William Richard Cosway. Kt. this monument was erected by his friends and the reformers of East Kent in the year 1835. G. Cooper fecit Canterbury." Sir William Richard Cosway was killed in a coaching accident at this site. At the time of the survey, the obelisk had been damaged by lightning, and the upper sections were weathered.
