Description
This is a malthouse and oast complex, along with a wall and gate, located about 15 metres west and south-west of Ivy Cottage in East Brabourne. The malthouse dates from the 17th century, while the oast is from the early 19th century. The structure is built of red brick on a ragstone base, topped with a plain tiled roof. The malthouse features a ragstone plinth that is sometimes half the height of the single storey. The brickwork displays irregular English and Garden wall bonds. The roof is hipped and steps up to the left. There are three large buttresses facing the road, eight boarded window openings, and a central group of four brick ventilation slits. Boarded doors are located to the left, centre left, and end right.
To the left, there is a red brick garden wall belonging to Ivy Cottage, approximately 3 feet high, ramped at each end, and extending about 20 metres in length. It features a central simple iron gate, with piers that have cast iron capitals and finials, and a dogtooth band halfway up the piers. To the south of the malthouse is the early 19th-century oast complex, which includes a two-storey stowage with double-height cart doors, a hipped roof, and a roundel at the rear. There is also a hipped stowage barn to the right, which has two hipped half dormers, wooden casements, cart doors, and a boarded door to the left. The rear courtyard is enclosed by boundary walls and includes an outbuilding. A second kiln and roundel were previously located behind the malthouse, and two single-storey vestigial buildings made of red brick and ragstone still survive.
