Description
The walled garden and attached animal engine house, located 75 meters west of Lainston House, date from the late 17th century and 18th century. The structure features brick walls with timber scantling and brick infill, along with a slated roof. The octagonal garden wall, which encloses about one hectare, stands 3 meters high and has a stepped brick coping. There are brick piers at the gateways on the east and west sides, and a late 20th-century gateway to the north. The engine house is a single-storey, three-bay building with 18th-century windows and a door. Inside, it contains massive timbers and a vertically set shaft that is 5 meters long, from which a bar descends at a 45-degree angle, supported by two struts. The end of the bar has a swingle tree for the harness.
