Description

This is an L-shaped row of cottages dating back to the 16th century, with significant alterations in the 17th century and a refronting in the 19th century. The construction is timber-framed and rendered, with some brick elements, and the roofs are thatched and tiled. The road-facing elevation is four bays wide, with a 19th-century bay added at the left end. There are three 19th-century planked doors at the inner ends of the original bays and within the added bay, alongside 2- and 3-light leaded casement windows. A jetty (overhanging upper floor) is present on the first floor of the original section, supported by moulded brackets. A lower jetty is on the 19th-century bay. Above are four regularly placed 2-light casement windows. The roof abuts a house to the left and is hipped to the right and half-hipped to the left. A large chimney stack is situated above the 19th-century bay, with a smaller ridge stack to the right of the centre, and remains of a stack at the right end. The right side of the row is 1½ storeys, with three bays and a single-storey bay linking it to the main range. A 19th-century door is located in the road-end bay, a 3-light casement window is inside the linking bay, and a further 2-light casement window is to the right. A bread oven projection is visible, followed by two 2-light casement windows, and a blocked doorway in the right-hand bay. Above are three eyebrow dormers with 2-light casement windows. The roof is thatched and hipped, with a ridge piece. A large chimney stack stands between the centre and left bays, and on the right gable. The roof of the linking bay is tiled. Inside, exposed roof timbers suggest the remains of a king post roof structure.
