Description

The Old Granary is a malthouse dating from the early and mid-19th century, later adapted for use as a craft centre. The building is constructed of brickwork in a Flemish Garden Wall bond, distinguished by blue headers. It has pointed 'Tudor' arched openings and patternwork in blue headers, with brick dentil eaves, all topped by a slate roof which is hipped in the main sections. The symmetrical north front has three storeys, with a window on each side of a central hoist doorway at the first and second floor levels. Two carriage arches are present at ground-floor level, with a projecting section to the west containing two small windows above a doorway. The original windows are industrial casements. A narrow, three-storeyed block is attached to the rear, with its short end facing Brook Street to the west, and entrance structures filling the corner area beneath a slate roof. Minor alterations have been made to the interior, but the exterior of the building remains virtually unaltered.
