Description
Farmhouse. The core of the building dates to the 16th century, with substantial additions and alterations in the 18th century. The original timber-frame structure is now encased in brick, incorporating some blue headers, and covered by an old plain tile roof. It began as a 3-bay timber-frame building with a smoke bay, to which a taller, lower-ridged bay was added to the left. A further bay was rebuilt to match the rest of the house during refronting, and single-storey service buildings were added to the right. Around 1800, a parallel range was built to the rear.
The front elevation is two storeys, five bays, including a blank smoke bay to the left of the centre. A 20th-century hip-roofed brick porch, with a glazed upper section, features an 18th-century six-panel door positioned to the left of centre. Large 18th-century 20-pane segmental-headed sash windows are found in the left and centre bays, while a smaller, similar 16-pane sash window is in the right bay. On the first floor, 18th-century 12-pane segmental-headed sashes are present in the centre and end bays, with the rightmost window at a higher level. All windows have 19th-century louvred shutters. A projecting brick eaves cornice runs along the original part of the house, with a dentilled cornice to the higher eaves of the two bays on the left. The roof of the main part is hipped, with a large stack to the left of the centre. The section to the left has a lower, more forward-projecting hipped roof.
