Description
Vaine Cottages is a house that has been converted into a pair of cottages. It dates from the 17th century and was encased in the 18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The building has a timber-frame core that is encased in brick and partly covered with tiles from the 20th century, and it features a thatched and tiled roof. The structure consists of three bays, with the timber-frame encased in brick and divided into two, the right bay being a separate unit. A tall one-storey bay was added to the right end, and a single-storey bay was added to the left end in the 20th century. The building has four bays and is half a storey high. The entrance to the left cottage is located at the inner end of the right bay, while the entrance to the right cottage is at the end of the older bay. Both entrances have 20th-century weatherboarded porches. The left cottage features two segmental-headed casements, while the right cottage has a two-light and a three-light casement. Each cottage has two eyebrow dormers, making a total of four two-light eyebrow dormers. The roof of the original part is thatched and half-hipped to the left, with ridge stacks located above the left door and at the right end of the thatch. The roof of the right bay is tiled. Vaine Cottages is owned by the National Trust.
