Description
Northington Hill House is a building dating from around 1864, originally built as a school by W Butterfield and later altered by Sir T G Jackson. It is now a house. The construction is flint with brick dressings and a tiled roof. The building is arranged in a U-shape, comprising a one-and-a-half-storey range on the left, a large two-storey school room on the right, and a connecting range with entrances to both. The front elevation, on the right-hand side, features the gable end of the house with a two-light mullioned and transomed window on each floor, with a half-hip roof. A slightly stepped-back central range contains three windows. To the left is a door to the house; in the centre, a slightly projecting porch has a blocked entrance to the school and two-light casements in a gabled dormer above. To the right, a four-light casement is set above a hipped dormer with mullioned and transomed windows. A toothed eaves cornice is present. The right side of the school room has a wide gable end with a pair of tall windows, now replaced with camber-headed casements on each floor, separated on the ground floor by a brick buttress. Above the windows is a recessed brick oval panel displaying the arms of Lord Ashburton. At the top of the gable is a corbelled timber bellcote with a hipped roof and a weathervane.
