Description

West Stoke Farmhouse is an inn that has been converted into a farmhouse, dating from the 17th century, 18th century, and early 19th century. The structure features a timber frame with brick infill, some brick casing, and tile hanging, while later sections are built of brick and stuccoed with incised lines. The roofs are slated, and there are rendered brick stacks. The building is L-shaped, with the original 17th-century inn forming one part and an early 19th-century range completing the square.

The 17th-century front is two storeys high, with three bays and a fourth bay to the left that belongs to the 19th-century addition, which has a 20th-century bay window in front. There is a central doorway with a 20th-century brick flat-roofed porch. Most windows are 20th-century but are set in their original openings. The roof is steeply pitched, featuring gable chimney stacks at each end of the three-bay section.

The 19th-century front is also two storeys and has three bays, with 20th-century bay windows on each side. The central glazed door is under a flat-roofed porch supported by four plain columns. Each side of the door has a 12-pane sash window, with a small 6-pane sash window above the door. The roof here is low-pitched with overhanging eaves and stacks on either side along the return ridge.

Inside, there is an early 18th-century built-in sideboard in the bar room, which has stone flagging and a large fireplace with ovens. Other interior features include 18th-century panelling and early 19th-century details in the later wing. The building served as the Red Lion coaching inn until around 1800, located on the now-defunct turnpike from Winchester through Wonston to Whitchurch.
