Description

Wells Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a cottage, with origins dating from the 16th century to the 20th century. It features a timber frame with brick infill, rubble flint with brick dressings, and some rendered areas, topped with a Marseilles tiled roof. The original 16th-century house has two bays and is positioned end-on to the road. A thinner, lower ridged bay was added to the road end, along with a parallel range in the 17th century. The 16th-century house was refronted in the 18th century, and a 20th-century bay was added to the side of the 17th-century range.

The roadside end showcases two 17th-century gables with exposed timber framing, originally designed to be half-hipped. To the left, there is a taller 16th-century gable with some exposed timber, while the left 17th-century gable features a 20th-century outshot porch attached to its side. The right gable is also from the 20th century. The left 17th-century gable has two irregular early 19th-century cast iron casements, and the right gable has a 20th-century steel window beneath a flat-roofed porch. All roofs are steeply pitched and gabled.

Inside the 16th-century section, there are heavy beams and joists with carved chamfer stops in the room at the road end, indicating it was used as a parlour. A beam in the partition between rooms shows chamfers for a door and window.
