Description
G Askew is a range of low buildings located on the north side of Bank Street in Bishops Waltham. The buildings date back to the 16th century and originally featured a timber frame, which was once separated from a 17th-century timber frame. In the early 19th century, the two parts were joined together, and there have been rear extensions and recladding, with many features dating from the late 19th century. The walls are made of painted brickwork, with the east side showcasing blue headers and red quoins beneath a flat arch. The tile roof at the east end suggests its former separate origin, featuring a half-hipped design with lower eaves, and now includes two 20th-century hipped dormers.
The south front elevation presents a long, low building divided into three sections, with a mix of two-storey and one-storey plus attic heights, featuring 2.1:2 windows. The windows are Victorian sashes and casements, and there are two small shopfronts with attached doorways. Access includes a plain door on the west side, a carriage entrance in the middle, and a side door to the east unit. At the west end, the wall conceals a timber frame that jetties out on two faces, supported by a dragon beam. The elevation facing St Peter's Street reveals exposed framing at a corner, while the east end of the former separate unit also displays exposed framing in the gables. The rear yard contains a variety of small extensions and outshots, constructed with brickwork and some boarding, with the roof sloping to low eaves in the central part.
