Description

The Old Forge and The Old Plough are a row of cottages with a 17th-century core, significantly altered and refaced in the 18th century. The building is constructed of brick, with some decorative chequerwork, and has an old plain tile roof. The original core is most visible in the right-hand part (The Old Plough), which is three bays wide. The left bay is narrower, and the section to the left (The Forge) is two bays wide with a rear wing extending from the right bay. The left-hand cottage has a central, top-lit six-panel door sheltered by a flat hood. There are 16-pane sash windows, set within rubbed brick surrounds, on each floor. The right-hand cottage features a four-panel door, flanked by bays and a flat hood, with 19th-century sash windows in rendered surrounds, each with a small four-light window above. The narrow left bay has a two-light casement window on each floor, not aligned with the roof, which is half-hipped to the left. The roof has an external end stack on the left, a stack at the right end, and a large ridge stack over the narrow bay. A diamond pattern is visible in the newer roof tiles.
