Description

Ampfield House is a small country house, now used as offices, originally built in the mid-18th century, with an early 19th-century extension and a further addition from the mid-19th century. The structure is primarily made of brick, with the oldest section in header bond and the sides in English bond, while the additions are in Flemish bond. The roof is covered with old plain tiles.

The house has a plan of five bays, is two stories high with an attic, and sits on a plinth. Each side features one bay that is slightly later, and there is a four-bay addition from the 19th century at one end, along with another two-bay addition. The front of the house shows the oldest part to the left, which has a central entrance above three stone steps. This entrance features a six-panel door in a plain frame, set within a doorcase that has an open pediment supported by large double-scroll brackets. To the right, in the first addition, there is another six-panel door in a doorcase with an open pediment on brackets. The windows are 12-pane sashes set in reveals with rubbed flat arches. The old part has recessed panels on the first floor, a stuccoed cornice (though the top is missing), and a parapet with coping, while the later bays have stone cornices on each side.

At the back, the house has a hipped roof with different sections, featuring flat-roofed dormers on the old part and gabled dormers on the later additions. The end elevation of the old part consists of three bays and has similar details, but with large angular bays on each side. Inside, the house retains many 18th-century features, particularly in the large drawing room, which boasts full softwood panelling and a marble fireplace.
