Description
The Romsey War Memorial is located towards the north of the park. Made of light-coloured stone, it stands approximately 6 meters tall and features a tapering square column on a tall plinth with a two-stepped base. Each corner of the plinth has a shaped, angled buttress that extends outward and is capped with a ball finial at the base of the shaft. The shaft has a stylised cross on each face, with a recessed cross incised into it. Beneath the arms of the crosses, there is a winged putto at each corner, and a wreath is carved in relief on each face at the bottom of the shaft.
On the north side of the column, the inscription reads: "THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." Near the top of the column, the word "HONOUR" is inscribed. On the south side, the inscription states: "THE WORLD WAR / 1939-1945 / THEY LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM, / ENDURED HARDNESS, FACED DANGER AND / FINALLY PASSED OUT OF THE SIGHT OF MEN / LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT THAT / THEIR NAMES BE NOT FORGOTTEN." The Roll of Honour is inscribed on all four sides of the monument.
