Description
Birchwood Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of painted brick in Sussex bond on a stuccoed plinth, topped with a peg tiled roof featuring 19th-century ridge tiles and end brick chimneystacks, one of which is stuccoed and the other has renewed brickwork. The building has two storeys and three windows, with a brick modillion eaves cornice. The first floor has three casement windows with cambered head linings, while the ground floor windows appear to have been enlarged, as their cambered linings do not extend the full width. The doorcase has a simple cambered surround with a modern door, which is now concealed by a 20th-century conservatory. There is one S-shaped and one straight iron tie. The rear features a 20th-century outshut with a tiled roof, two 20th-century dormers with casements, and two casements on the ground floor. The right side elevation is stuccoed, while the left side elevation has 20th-century casements.
Inside, the farmhouse has axial beams with 1-inch chamfers and run-out stops, a wooden bressumer over the open fireplace, and a stair cupboard with a plank door and H hinges. The right side room features a cambered brick arch in the former rear hall, and the left side room has a cambered brick chimneypiece. The staircase has stick balusters and three plank doors leading to the first floor. The roof includes angled queen struts with through purlins and pegged rafters, which are strengthened by later rough poles. Birchwood Farmhouse is depicted on an estate map from 1750 of the Duke of Northumberland's estate.
