Description

Houghton Manor House is a Grade II listed manor house located on Houghton Church Lane. It dates from the mid-18th century, as indicated by a fire insurance plaque from 1760, and was extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building was restored in 1980. Constructed of brick with an old plain tile roof, it stands two stories high and features a five by three bay layout for the mid-18th century section, which has a central wing at the rear and a low service range to the right. A wide bay was added to the left around 1800, along with further extensions to the rear in the 19th century.

The garden front is two stories tall with five bays, including a slightly set-back bay on the left. It has central glazed 20th-century double doors framed by a heavy doorcase with fluted pilasters, supporting an entablature and pediment. On either side of the doors are 19th-century low-silled 15-pane sash windows, with similar windows in the left bay. The first floor features six 12-pane sashes, all of which have rubbed brick arches and a toothed brick cornice. The roof is hipped and continuous, with a large central ridge stack above the door.

The entrance front, which is the left end of the garden front, has a two-story, three-bay wing on the left side of the rear wing that projects to the right end of the main range. This wing contains a central six-panel door with a similar doorcase and five 12-pane sashes. The end of the main range features a Venetian window with a rubbed brick arch and a round-headed window above it, along with a 9-pane sash on the right side. The wings are half-hipped, with a stack located centrally behind and a hipped end on the main block. The interior has been remodeled.
