Description

Middle Bridge, dated 1788, was designed by the architect Robert Mylne, who is well-known for his contributions to bridge design. The bridge was rebuilt and widened in 1931 by W Taylor, County Surveyor, following Mylne's original design. It features a graceful single segmental arch with slightly projecting abutments on each bank, each adorned with a plain circular panel. At road level, there is a plain raised string with a small bedmould. The bridge has a plain solid parapet and coping, which is moulded on the outer face, with the parapet curving outwards for some distance at each end. This bridge replaces an older structure and complements the architectural style of Broadlands, which offers a good view from the bridge itself. Middle Bridge, along with Nos 1 to 7 (odd) Mainstone and Nos 177 & 179 Middlebridge Street, forms a cohesive group.
