Description

The building at 1 Mainstone is a 16th-century structure, with alterations in the 18th century. It is a two-storey building constructed of colourwashed brick, featuring a distinctive toothed brick eaves cornice and an old tile roof. The riverside elevation incorporates a two-storey angular bay window to the north-west, with two-light casement windows on each floor. This bay window has a small dentilled cornice around its head and a plastered finish beneath the windows. The road elevation has two segmental-headed, two-light casement windows on the ground floor. A 6-panel flush door is set within an architrave surround and a decorative doorcase, which includes fluted pilasters, cross-reeded brackets, a fluted frieze, a shallow moulded cornice broken forward over the brackets, and a moulded, dentilled pediment. All casement windows are original. The building forms a group with Nos. 177 and 179 Middlebridge Street and Nos. 1 to 7 (odd) Middle Bridge.
