Description
The Norman doorway to St Mary's Church, dating from the 12th century, is located on the east side of Andover High Street. This doorway was originally part of a medieval church that was demolished in 1840. It has been reconstructed to serve as an entrance gateway to the churchyard, which is accessed by a series of steps.
The doorway features a rectangular section of stone walling that fills the passageway, and a semi-circular arch composed of three recessed stages. The innermost stage is plain, while the outer two stages rest on cushion caps above columns. A continuous impost band runs along the arch, adorned with chevron ornamentation on the two outer stages. In front of the archway, there is a paved area bordered by wrought-iron rails with central gates. Beyond the arch, the pathway includes paving and two flights of steps, consisting of seven and three steps respectively.
