Description
The Church of St. Peter is a parish church built in 1871 by William White. It is a rebuilding in the Early English style of a Norman church and incorporates the original doorway, font, and one window. The church features an aisleless nave and chancel, along with a small north vestry and a south porch.
The building has a tile roof and a bell turret at the west end, which has an exposed timber frame with plastered panels. The main three verticals of the turret rest on stone brackets and are topped with a shingled broach spire. The walls are constructed of large flints with stone dressings and thin red brick bands, and there is one stepped buttress. The church has three small windows, including an early window that has been rebuilt into the north side of the nave. The east end features four traceried lights and triple lancets, along with narrow priest's and vestry doors. The entrance doorway has been replaced but originally had a round arch and a simple label motif. The gabled and timber-framed porch is supported by stone base walls.
Inside, the church contains a piscina and a low gated screen beneath the chancel arch, as well as massive belfry timbers. The Norman font is a tapered drum with a shallow chevron ornament at the top. The chancel has coloured floor tiles, an arch-braced chancel roof, and Kingpost trusses in the nave.
