Description

The grotto doorway, dating from the early 19th century, is located 150 meters southwest of Houghton Lodge. It features rustic flint nodules that create the walls and a vaulted roof, which is supported by a brick vault and has a tiled floor. The doorway has a square plan with a turret at each corner. At each end, there is a pointed archway with a heavy planked pointed door that has blind tracery in panels at the road end of the arch. The sides curve upwards to form the vaulted roof, and the turrets rise to a point.
